Metropolitan Museum of Art Eyes Mid-August Reopening

As states across the nation slowly begin gradual reopenings, New York has followed suit, albeit in a calculated manner. While the “New York State on Pause” order remains in effect until May 28th, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio envisions a mid-June target date for a phase one reopening of the Big Apple. Any easing of restrictions would need to be in alignment with the criteria established by Governor Cuomo.

With an eye towards the latter portion of 2020, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is circling a mid-August, or the weeks following, for a target date of reopening to the public. Museum officials released a statement on Tuesday, noting that any reopening would coincide with changes for the safety of the public:

"Initially, the days and hours The Met is open will likely be reduced, and, given the need to provide an environment that respects social distance requirements, the Museum will not have tours, talks, concerts, or events through calendar year 2020."

The 2020 Costume Institute Benefit, more commonly referred to as The Met Gala, will not take place this year after the Museum postponed its original May 4 date due to the ongoing health crisis. The Museum expects the gala to take place once again in 2021.

"The Met has endured much in its 150 years, and today continues as a beacon of hope for the future. This museum is also a profound reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of art to offer comfort, inspiration, and community. As we endure these challenging and uncertain times, we are encouraged by looking forward to the day when we can once again welcome all to enjoy The Met's collection and exhibitions," President Daniel H. Weiss said.

Whether to observe its works of art or to take a photo alongside its iconic steps, the Met has been one of the staples of New York City, synonymous with the rhythms of the Big Apple. While a return to normal lies farther down the future, its plan to reopen later this year is a small reminder of nearing the eventual finish line.
